The Final
Question
So how can gumption help?
The first thing to do is to familiarise yourself
with the content of our second IP page(it's
FREE). Understand the general concepts of copyright
and trade marking, etc.
Secondly, please contact us (that's FREE too) to
find out where & when the next IP event is being
held in your area. If there isn't one, maybe we'll
organise one.
Thirdly, we have a consultancy service available where we'll carry out a full diagnosis of your
business needs and indicate how best to protect &
maximise
your IP within a proper business development
setting, and with regard to your budget. That's not
FREE, but is very good value. It's all very relative, of
course!
Finally, only use an IP practitioner that truly
specialises in IP. Most solicitors don't and please
don't be too impressed by the fancy blurb on their
web site.
Brass From Gumption
Brass From Gumption is
about helping
entrepreneurs capture, protect & exploit their most
valuable asset - their know-how.
Making money from accumulative business activity is
often over-looked, misunderstood or ignored.
However, intellectual property (or IP) is key to
most
business success and can be sold (or assigned) like
any other product & service.
Most businesses and
some business support organisations are not familiar
enough with how IP fits in to general business
development and what can be done to minimise
disputes and maximise opportunities.
Brass From
Gumption aims to redress this.
We won't go into detail about the ins & outs of
IP on this web site. There are a number of
organisations listed on our links page who are
better equipped to do this. We will though, help to
make it relevant to you.
2 Common
Questions
So what's it all got to do with me?
Ever use an outside contractor or designer?
Employ staff?
Have a brand or logo?
Use the internet for information?
Built a database?
Have products or services?
Being innovative?
Then it's got everything to do with you.
Isn't this legal stuff expensive?
Well, it depends on what you're doing.
If you're into lengthy negotiations and detailed
contracts for licensing a product to a blue chip
company, then maybe costs will add up. And if this
is the case, don't be intimidated by sharp-suited
solicitors or patent attorneys. They're tradesmen
too! Ask for a quote as you would a plumber or a
joiner and they should do their best to help and
guide you (with disclaimers & get outs of course!).
All costs can then be set against the projected
benefits.
But for most people or companies, looking after IP
matters can be pretty straight forward and is usually just a matter of knowing what to
do. This makes it either free or relatively low
cost.
